Description:

Rare complete 1st-edition set of the Malayan Trilogy by Anthony Burgess in good condition. The Malayan Trilogy consists of three novels: Time for a Tiger (1956), The Enemy in the Blanket (1958), and Beds in the East (1959).

Anthony Burgess (1917-1993) was a renowned English writer and composer. His dystopian novel A Clockwork Orange published in 1962 remains his best-known work, where its movie adaptation by Kubrick became a cinema classic.

Burgess' Malaysian connection

Burgess was an English instructor under the British Colonial Service from 1954 to 1958, during which he taught at the prestigious Malay College, Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) and also at a teacher's institute in Kelantan. These years proved formative for Burgess’s writing career, as he completed three volumes of work during his off-duty hours.

The trilogy follows Victor Crabbe, a resident teacher at Mansor School, as he navigates professional challenges and marital difficulties. The trilogy explores the effects of the communist insurgency and the waning hours of the colonial rule on British Malaya. Burgess also explores the tensions within the pluralistic society and the struggle to shape a national identity as the peninsula prepares for its postcolonial future.
